An album featuring the score for Drew McOnie’s new dance thriller Jekyll & Hyde has been released to coincide with the show’s hotly anticipated debut at The Old Vic.
Currently previewing ahead of the show’s opening night on Wednesday (25 May) the show which has been devised, directed and choreographed by McOnie will play a very limited run at The Old Vic until Saturday (28 May).
Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of the ultimate split personality The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Jekyll & Hyde has been specially commissioned by The Old Vic as part of its new dance collaboration with The McOnie Company, led by associate artist McOnie.
The album released by Air-Edel Records features music by Tony-nominated and award-winning composer Grant Olding.
Commenting on his work Olding said: “The challenge of creating a dance score with a split personality was the jumping off point for the music of Jekyll & Hyde. It’s been enormous fun finding two distinct sound worlds and harmonic palettes that sum up Drew’s characters of Dr Jekyll – a wistfully romantic botanist and his dark, sexy, dangerous alter-ego Mr Hyde, which has resulted in an eclectic score, full of contrasts.”
The cast is headed by Daniel Collins (Show Boat, The Car Man) as Dr Jekyll, while Tim Hodges (Making Midnight, Edward Scissorhands) takes on the role of Mr Hyde. The cast also includes Ashley Andrews (Drunk, Wicked); Joao Carolino (The Sound of Music, Waterbabies); Carrie Taylor Johnson (Nutcracker!, Swan Lake); Anabel Kutay (The Lorax, Drunk); Ebony Molina (The Lorax, Singin’ in the Rain); Rachel Muldoon (Notre Dame de Paris, Wicked); Freya Rowley (Tarzan the Musical, Cats); Alexzandra Sarmiento (In the Heights, A Chorus Line); Barnaby Thompson (Elf The Musical, Oklahoma!); and Jason Winter (White Christmas, Matilda).
Simon Hardwick is the show’s associate director with design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting by Richard Howell and sound design by Sebastian Frost.
