The first video has been released from the much-anticipated European premiere of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Allegro at the Southwark Playhouse this August. Katie Bernstein sings iconic number ‘The Gentleman is a Dope’ from the musical, directed by Thom Southerland and produced by Danielle Tarento.
The show, which was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s third collaboration for the stage following Oklahoma! and Carousel, will open for a six-week season in The Large at Southwark Playhouse from Friday 5 August to Saturday 10 September.
The full cast includes Katie Bernstein (Mrs Henderson Presents, Sunset Boulevard and Sweeney Todd at the ENO); David Delve (Grand Hotel at Southwark Playhouse); Julia J Nagle (Dirty Dancing on tour and in the West End); Dylan Turner (Beautiful – The Carole King Musical); Susan Travers (European premiere of Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s State Fair at Trafalgar Studios); Gary Tushaw (Sunset Boulevard and Sweeney Todd at the ENO); Steve Watts (Chariots of Fire in the West End). They are joined by Cassandra McCowan, Matthew McDonald, Louise Olley, Benjamin Purkiss, Jacqueline Tate, Samuel Thomas, Leah West and Matthew Woodyatt.
Reuniting the award-winning team behind Grey Gardens, Grand Hotel, Titanic, Parade and Mack & Mabel, producer Tarento and director Southerland, the production will feature a new adaptation of the book written by Southerland and new orchestrations.
With music by Richard Rodgers and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Allegro which opened on Broadway in 1947 follows the fortunes of Joseph Taylor Jr, the son of a local doctor born in 1905 in a small town in the Midwest of America.
The full creative team consists of director Southerland, orchestrator Mark Cumberland, musical director Dean Austin, choreographer Lee Proud, set designer Anthony Lamble, costume designer Jonathan Lipman, lighting designer Derek Anderson, sound designer Andrew Johnson and producer and casting director Danielle Tarento.
