Have you ever heard of the musicals ‘Mary Poppins has Ebola’, ‘Thespionage’ or ‘When gingers ruled the world’? Probably not, since they opened and closed on the same night. These are just some of the examples of the weird and amazing shows improvised on the spot by talented ensemble Baby Wants Candy.
The show began with a quick explanation of the rules: nothing has been prepared, everything you will see before you is completely improvised, including plot, characters, music, lyrics and “what they affectionately refer to as” choreography. Pro tip: if you want to have a chance at giving the evening’s musical a title, you better have one ready before the show so you can shout it out when requested. The night I attended it was ‘Bacon rolls must die’.
It was deliriously entertaining watching this amazing troupe work their magic. In no time at all they had whipped up an opening umber to this implausible musical they made about vegans vs. meat eaters, complete with hilarious chorus and choreography. It’s no mean feat to make up a catchy tune and lyrics that rhyme on the spot, but they make it seem second-nature. Even when they slipped up they always managed to milk the moment for big laughs. It was all brilliant fun.
It’s not much use describing the show I saw, because it will be different every night. Go and see for yourself, I guarantee you will walk away enchanted.
