Back to Back Maltby and Shire revivals at The Pheasantry

Maltby ShireAward-winning independent theatre company Neil Eckersley Productions is to produce revivals of Maltby and Shire’s critically acclaimed revues Starting Here, Starting Now and Closer Than Ever at London’s The Pheasantry next month.

With lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr and music by David Shire, Starting Here, Starting Now is a chronicle of the changing emotions in romantic relationships from first kiss to final separation.

First produced at the Manhattan Theatre Club 40 years ago, the show opened Off-Broadway in 1977 and was premiered in London in 1984 and later revised in 1993. The Grammy Award-nominated revue was the source of a number of distinctive songs including ‘Autumn’, ‘What About Today?’ and the title song ‘Starting Here, Starting Now’ which were recorded and performed by Barbra Streisand.

The new production which plays The Pheasantry from 18–20 April stars Sam Lupton (Wicked, Avenue Q), Carolyn Maitland (Miss Saigon) and Kayleigh McKnight (Bend It Like Beckham). Starting Here, Starting Now is produced by Neil Eckersley with musical direction by Kris Rawlinson.

The Maltby and Shire multi award-winning companion piece to Starting Here, Starting Now, Closer Than Ever, will move in to The Pheasantry from 25–27 April.

Also produced by Eckersley, but with musical direction by Nick Barstow, the show stars Wendy Carr (Princess Ida), Richard Carson (Miss Saigon), Emily Chesterton (Shout! The Mod Musical) and Nicholas Corre (Bar Mitzvah Boy).

After premiering in Massachusetts in 1989, Closer Than Ever soon opened Off-Broadway where the tale of love and relationships played for 300 performances. The show returned to New York in 2012 and last played London in 2014.
