Casting has been announced for the 3oth anniversary performances of Sheldon Epps’ musical revue Blues in the Night at The Hippodrome Casino in June.
Ian Carlyle (We Will Rock You, Show Boat) will join Enyonam Gbesemete (Disney’s The Lion King, Show Boat), Bleu Woodward (Kinky Boots, South Pacific) and Cleopatra Higgins (Thriller Live, pictured) for two performances on Wednesday 7 June 2017.
The performances will be directed by Samuel Quested with musical direction by Joe Louis Robinson.
Conceived by American stage and television director Epps, the show is a celebration of the songs and singers most intrinsically linked with classic blues. Set in a run-down hotel in 1930s Chicago, the dialogue-free show is the story of three lovelorn women whose hearts have been broken by the same man.
Featuring genre classics include ‘Taking a Chance On Love’, ‘Wild Women Don’t Have the Blues’ and the title song, the two performances of the show will feature a live blues band.
Originally staged by Epps and the late Gregory Hines Off-Broadway in 1980, the show was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical when it moved on to Broadway under the direction of Epps in 1982.
The show’s London debut production at the Donmar Warehouse in June 1987 transferred to the Piccadilly Theatre where it ran until July 1988. The Donmar version received Olivier Award nominations for Best New Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (Carol Woods).
