UK audiences will get their first glimpse of the Tony Award-winning musical Newsies when it makes its cinema debut on Sunday (19 February).
The one day only screenings in the UK, Germany, Australia and New Zealand follow on from similar events in the US on 16 February and precedes screenings in various other countries on 22 February.
Based on choreographer Kenny Ortega’s 1992 film and produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies The Broadway Musical features a Tony Award-winning score with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) and lyrics by Jack Feldman.
The musical, which made its Broadway debut in 2012, features choreography by Christopher Gattelli and a book by Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots).
Distributed by Disney Theatrical Productions alongside Arts Alliance Distribution Ltd, the show was filmed live at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre and features original Broadway cast members Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay, Ben Fanhauser and Andrew Keenan-Bolger. The Broadway contingent was joined by North American tour stars Steve Blanchard, Aisha de Haas and Ethan Steiner, along with members of both ensembles.
One of the most popular films in the Disney home viewing catalogue, the film Newsies – inspired by the true events during the ‘Newsboy Strike’ of 1899 when ordinary working class people took on the might of publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst – became Disney’s single most requested title to be adapted for the stage.
Frozen, Disney’s latest blockbuster movie to receive similar stage musical treatment, is slated to open on Broadway in spring 2018.
