Rehearsals have begun for Joybubbles, the third production in The Other Palace’s Work In Progress series.

With Jonathan Slinger (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) in the title role, the cast also features Evelyn Hoskins (Spring Awakening) as Little Joe, supported by Esh Alladi, Emma Thornett, Ben Fox, Ceri-Lyn Cissone, Terence Frisch, Julie LeGrand and Stuart Matthew Price who will all play various characters.

Written by Carl Grose and Alex Silverman, Joybubbles is based on the intriguing true story of Joe Engressia. Born in the US in 1949, Engressia was blind from birth, but had the gift of perfect pitch, which enabled him to escape into the world of the newly established telephone network. After being shut down by the FBI, Engressia eventually reverted to his childhood self, a five-year-old called Joybubbles.

Following on from Heathers The Musical and Dr Feelgood, Joybubbles – which is directed by Raz Shaw – will be unveiled to the public on Saturday (17 June).

The Other Palace’s Work in Progress series offers productions a space to create, develop and explore their work. Each show has a public sharing where audiences can be the first not only to see the new work but also help in the development of the show by offering feedback and opinion. The audience feedback is then given to the production to help inform the next stage of the project’s development.

Joybubbles will be followed by Frank Wildhorn and Don Black’s Bonnie & Clyde which will move into the Studio from 26 June until 1 July. Featuring a book by Ivan Menchell, the musical had a short run on Broadway at the end of 2011.

Formerly the St James Theatre, the newest addition to The Really Useful Theatres Group, launched as The Other Palace in February with ambitious plans to discover, develop and reimagine musicals.
