Singer/songwriter Declan Bennett has been cast in the title role in the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
The star, who was the original lead in the London cast of Once, will head the cast in the latest production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ground-breaking musical which will run from 15 July until 27 August.
Bennett, who also appeared in Boy George’s musical Taboo, has had five UK Top 20 singles and a UK Top 20 album with Brit Award nominated boy band Point Break. He has appeared on Broadway in productions of American Idiot and Rent, and has also toured the US in Rent. He left BBC TV soap EastEnders last year and his most recent solo album Record: BREAKUP was released as a live acoustic version in 2013.
Commenting on Bennett’s casting, artistic director Timothy Sheader said: “Declan’s music background brings a particular skill set and authenticity to this gig-like production of the show, and his past stage work in Rent, American Idiot and Once makes his Jesus a particularly exciting prospect.”
Celebrating 45 years since Jesus Christ Superstar first hit the stage, the Regent’s Park production is directed by Sheader. Musical direction is by Tom Deering (Made in Dagenham, From Here to Eternity), design by Tom Scutt (Constellations, Les Liaisons Dangereuses) and choreography by Olivier Award nominee (for In The Heights) Drew McOnie (Jekyll & Hyde). Further casting details will be announced at a later date.
