Mark Anderson will play the title role in the European premiere of the hit Off-Broadway rock musical The Toxic Avenger when it opens at London’s Southwark Playhouse next month.
The actor, who played Elder Thomas in the original West End cast of The Book of Mormon, will play Toxie the Toxic Avenger in the production of the show which is based on a 1980s cult classic sci-fi comedy from genre filmmakers Troma Entertainment.
The show, which is due to play the South London venue from 22 April until 21 May, also stars Hannah Grover (Mamma Mia!), Lizzii Hills (Chicago), Marc Pickering (The Glee Club UK tour) and Ashley Samuels (The Book of Mormon).
With a book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by David Bryan, the team behind the quadruple Tony Award winning Memphis, the musical comedy debuted Off-Broadway in 2009.
The European premiere at the Southwark Playhouse is directed by Benji Sperring, with musical direction by Alex Beetschen, set and costume design by Mike Lees, casting by Jane Deitch, lighting design by Nic Farman, sound design by Andy Johnson and choreography by Lucie Pankhurst.
Writer DiPietro says: “The Toxic Avenger is a modern, musical superhero and the world leader in the fight against pollution, corruption and evil politicians. So how brilliant that he’s finally going where he’s needed most – London.”
