CD Review – Cockeyed Optimist – Jenn Gambatese

COCKEYED OPTIMIST (Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein) – JENN GAMBATESE (Jay Records – CdJAY1447)

To my shame I had never heard of Jenn Gambatese before being sent this CD to review. I now know she played Jane in Disney’s stage musical version of Tarzan on the Great White Way, Glinda on a national tour of Wicked, and is currently in the Broadway case of School of Rock – The Musical.

Having listened to this CD of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s finest, I can only conclude that she is a new Broadway star soon to take the industry by storm.

Gambatese possess a voice that sounds as if the songs were written specifically for her. As you listen to the album, you can actually imagine her on stage playing the roles she is portraying on record.

Of course, she is more than ably assisted by wonderful orchestrations and other voices supplied by Matt Bogart, Mary Testa, Jeff Kready and Gavin Creel.

Tracks include: ‘It’s a Grand Night for Singing’, ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, ‘Love Look Away’, ‘No Other Love’, ‘Something Wonderful’, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, and lots of others – in fact there are 19 tracks in all on the album.

This is one of those albums that all musical theatre lovers will want to have in their collection and I think (and hope) we will be hearing a lot more from Gambatese in the future.
