British singer actress Cynthia Erivo has collected a prestigious Drama Desk Award for her performance in the Broadway transfer of The Color Purple.
The Londoner first played the role of Celie Harris in the Menier Chocolate Factory production in 2013. Following her Broadway debut in the transfer of the show last year, she has won the prize for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
Other British talents to take home gongs at the 61st Annual Drama Desk Awards event included The Color Purple’s director John Doyle, who shared the award for Outstanding Director of a Musical with Fiddler On the Roof’s Bartlett Sher; writer John Caird (Outstanding Book of a Musical for Daddy Long Legs); and designers Christopher Oram (Outstanding Set Design for a Play for Hughie) and Finn Ross (Outstanding Projection Design for American Psycho).
The smash hit new version of 1920s ground-breaker Shuffle Along was named as Outstanding Musical while the popular production of 1960s romantic comedy She Loves Me took home the award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
Six-time Tony award nominee Danny Burstein claimed the prize for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his performance in Fiddler On the Roof; multi-award winner Jane Krakowski took home the award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for She Loves Me; Christopher Fitzgerald picked up his second Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for the Sara Bareilles show Waitress.
Other musical theatre winners included Savion Glover (Outstanding Choreography award for Shuffle Along); Steve Martin and Edie Brickell (Outstanding Music for Bright Star); and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Outstanding Lyrics award for Dear Evan Hansen).
