Thanks to Musical Theatre Review’s official photographer Roy Tan, here are exclusive production images of the European premiere of the musical Death Takes a Holiday, continuing at the Charing Cross Theatre, London until 4 March (press night is on 23 January).
Zoë Doano, Chris Peluso and Mark Inscoe head the cast of the much-anticipated staging of Maury Yeston’s Death Takes a Holiday, the third production in Thom Southerland’s first season as artistic director, following on from the critically acclaimed Titanic and Ragtime.
Directed by Southerland, the show is the latest from the multi Tony Award-winning composer of Nine, Grand Hotel and Titanic.
Based on the Italian play La Morte In Vacanza by Alberto Casella, the musical has a score by Yeston and a book by fellow multi award-winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers) and Peter Stone (Titanic, Woman of the Year).
The romantic tale was previously made into a 1934 film starring Frederic March and was also the inspiration for the 1998 Brad Pitt movie Meet Joe Black. The musical Death Takes a Holiday made its debut Off-Broadway in 2011.
The company also includes Kathryn Akin (Carousel), Anthony Cable (The Sound of Music), Trudi Camilleri (Ragtime), Ken Christiansen (The Fix), Scarlett Courteney (Titanic), Sophie-May Feek (Made in Dagenham), Matthew McDonald (Allegro), Gay Soper (Funny Girl), Ashley Stillburn (The Phantom of the Opera), Samuel Thomas (Floyd Collins), and Helen Turner (Cats).
Set design is by Morgan Large, with costume design by Jonathan Lipman, lighting design by Matt Daw and sound design by Andrew Johnson. The choreographer is Sam Spencer-Lane, the musical director is Dean Austin and Danielle Tarento is the show’s casting director.
Death Takes a Holiday is the third Charing Cross Theatre production, following Titanic and Ragtime, produced by Tarento, Steven M. Levy, Sean Sweeney and Vaughan Williams.
