death-takes-a-holiday-castMaxwell Caulfield, Zoë Doano and Chris Peluso will head the cast of the much-anticipated European premiere of Maury Yeston’s Death Takes a Holiday at the Charing Cross Theatre next month.

The third production in Thom Southerland’s first season as artistic director, following on from the critically acclaimed Titanic and Ragtime (which has just received a record 14 Off West End Award nominations), Death Takes a Holiday will run from 16 January until 4 March 2017 with a press night on 23 January.

Directed by Southerland, the show is the latest from the multi Tony Award-winning composer of Nine, Grand Hotel and Titanic.

Based on the Italian play La Morte In Vacanza by Alberto Casella, the musical has a score by Yeston and a book by fellow multi award-winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers) and Peter Stone (Titanic, Woman of the Year).

The romantic tale was previously made into a 1934 film starring Frederic March and was also the inspiration for the 1998 Brad Pitt movie Meet Joe Black. The musical Death Takes a Holiday made its debut Off-Broadway in 2011.

Southerland’s production will feature screen and stage star Caulfield fresh from playing Nathan Detroit in the tour of the Chichester Festival Theatre’s production of Guys and Dolls. He will be joined by Doano who has just finished a year in the West End as Cosette in Les Misérables and Peluso who made his West End debut this year as Chris in Miss Saigon. Peluso will appear in Death Takes a Holiday until 11 February when James Gant (Titanic) will step into the role.

The company also includes Kathryn Akin (Carousel), Anthony Cable (The Sound of Music), Trudi Camilleri (Ragtime), Ken Christiansen (The Fix), Scarlett Courteney (Titanic), Sophie-May Feek (Made in Dagenham), Matthew McDonald (Allegro), Gay Soper (Funny Girl), Ashley Stillburn (The Phantom of the Opera), Samuel Thomas (Floyd Collins), and Helen Turner (Cats).

Set design is by Morgan Large, with costume design by Jonathan Lipman, lighting design by Matt Daw and sound design by Andrew Johnson. The choreographer is Sam Spencer-Lane, the musical director is Dean Austin and Danielle Tarento is the show’s casting director.

Death Takes a Holiday is the third Charing Cross Theatre production, following Titanic and Ragtime, produced by Tarento, Steven M. Levy, Sean Sweeney and Vaughan Williams.
