Derby Theatre and Mercury Theatre, Colchester’s new production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd is currently in rehearsal ahead of its opening later this month.

The musical will play Derby Theatre from 30 September until 22 October before transferring to Colchester’s Mercury Theatre where it will run from 26 October until 12 November.

Starring Hugh Maynard (Miss Saigon) as the ‘Demon Barber’ himself and Sophie-Louise Dann (Bend It Like Beckham) as his partner in grisly crime, Mrs Lovett, the latest production of Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s multi-award-winning musical thriller is directed by the Mercury’s artistic directed Daniel Buckroyd.

The cast also includes Christina Bennington (Oklahoma!), David Durham (The Lion King), Jack Wilcox (Singin’ in the Rain), Julian Hoult (The Jew of Malta), Simon Shorten (War of the Worlds), Kara Lane (The Sound of Music), Daniel Buckley (Loserville) and Ryan Heenan (The Burnt Part Boys).

Commenting on the production, director Buckroyd said: “Sweeney Todd is one of those shows that actors are just dying to perform (no pun intended!), so we’ve assembled an incredibly talented cast for this production. A company of ten performers with an extraordinary wealth of West End experience between them, and the vocal power that Sondheim’s show demands, led by Olivier Award-nominated actress Sophie-Louise Dann as Mrs Lovett, and, fresh from his success as one of the leads in Miss Saigon, Hugh Maynard as the eponymous barber.”
