This year’s From Page to Stage event, beginning today (31 October), sees Mark Anderson, Emma Kingston, Sarah Earnshaw and Madalena Alberto (pictured) join the cast for the 2016 line-up of showcase musicals which includes the 14-minute musical 21 Chump Street by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
As previously announced, the other showcase musicals to feature at the event at the Tristan Bates Theatre in London’s Covent Garden from 31 October until 20 November are Pollyanna, The Toyboy Diaries and song cycle Heart of Winter.
With a book and lyrics by Steven Gallagher and music by Linda Barnett, Pollyanna will be directed by Robert McQueen with musical direction by Tamara Saringer. The cast includes Madalena Alberto (Cats, Evita); Mark Anderson (The Toxic Avenger, The Book of Mormon); Eva Crawford (Dick Whittington, Into the Woods); Martin Dickinson (The Sound of Music, We Will Rock You); Caitlin Emilie Garcia (Gypsy, Giselle); Jackie Marks (Les Misérables, Evita) and Nigel Richards (The Stationmaster, The Phantom of the Opera).
Based on a book by Wendy Salisbury, The Toyboy Diaries has been adapted for the stage by Simon Warne and Salisbury with music and lyrics by Andy Collyer.
Bronagh Lagan will direct with musical direction also by Saringer, and the cast will include: Mark Anderson; Suanne Braun (Cougar the Musical, Cabaret); Martin Dickinson (The Sound of Music, We Will Rock You); Jackie Marks and Nigel Richards.
Heart of Winter features music and lyrics by award winner Tim Connor with story and dramaturgy by Lia Buddle. The piece will also be directed by Lagan with musical direction by Ben Ferguson. The cast includes Sarah Earnshaw (Spamalot, Jekyll and Hyde).
The European premiere of Miranda’s short musical 21 Chump Street will be directed by Amy Anders Corcoran with musical direction by Luke Di Silva. The cast will include: Danny Black (Altar Boyz, Sister Act); Jordan Castle (Merrily We Roll Along, Twelve Angry Men); Jason Kajdi (West Side Story, Gifted); Emma Kingston (In the Heights, Priscilla Queen of the Desert); Alessandro Lubrano (Irving Berlin’s Face the Music, Bring It On – The Musical); and Olly McCauley (Into the Woods, In The Heights).
As previously announced, casting for the three semi-staged readings includes Beverley Klein (Platonov Ivanov, Candide), Ian Reddington (EastEnders; Coronation Street), Gerard McCarthy (Beautiful Thing; Hollyoaks), Jodie Jacobs (Rock of Ages, Legally Blonde) and Union J’s Jaymi Hensley.
Now in its fourth year, Aria Entertainment’s popular new musical presentation follows on from a 2015 season that proved to be the event’s most successful to date.
From Page to Stage 2016 will also include readings of Luna Park, Bananaman the Musical and Rehab.
The season is produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment with casting is by Benjamin Newsome. Next year the season will become part of the new schedule at The Other Palace (currently the St James Theatre).
