Olivier Award winner George Maguire and current Rocky Horror star Dominic Andersen appeared alongside Broadway and West End leading lady Kerry Ellis (Wicked), Preeya Kalidas (Bend It Like Beckham) and Ramin Karimloo (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables) for the concert production of Godspell at St. Paul’s Church in London’s Covent Garden. Also in the cast were talented new young performers in a production that raised funds for The British Theatre Academy, an organisation set up to give young people unable to afford theatre training the opportunity to work with top creatives in venues around the country.
One of the most distinctive musicals of the 1970s, Godspell was written by Wicked’s Stephen Schwartz who based his work on the parables of Jesus recounted in the Gospels of St Matthew and St Luke.
Directed by Dean Johnson with musical direction by Michael Bradley, the St. Paul’s production was hosted by Mark Shenton.
British Theatre Academy artistic director Matthew Chandler said: “I was delighted that our kids had the opportunity to work with such amazing, inspiring, world-class talents. Godspell was an unforgettable experience for them all.”
A cast of 300 British Theatre Academy performers appeared in the West End this summer in the special family version of the Tony Award-winning musical The Secret Garden at the Ambassadors Theatre.
