Declan Bennett is one of four cast members from the multi award-winning 2016 Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar to return for the show’s much-anticipated 2017 limited season.

Singer-songwriter Bennett will take to the Regent’s Park stage once again in the title role alongside Tyrone Huntley who will reprise his award-winning portrayal of Judas, David Thaxton as Pilate and Peter Caulfield as Herod when the show returns this summer.

Originally intended as a limited run of just 41 performances from 11 August, the theatre has now added extra dates which will extend the production’s return run until 23 September.

Bennett, the original lead in the London cast of Once, first stepped into the central role in production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s groundbreaking musical last summer.

Huntley, who collected the 2016 Evening Standard Emerging Talent Award and was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance as Judas, is currently appearing in the hit Savoy Theatre production of Dreamgirls.

An Olivier Award winner for the Donmar Warehouse’s Passion, Thaxton has appeared as both Enjoiras and Javert in Les Misérables and featured in the new musical Only the Brave at the Wales Millennium Centre. Caulfield has appeared in One Man, Two Guvnors and the Royal Opera House’s Into the Woods.

With direction by artistic director Timothy Sheader, design by Tom Scutt, choreography by Drew McOnie, musical supervision by Tom Deering, lighting design by Lee Curran and sound design by Nick Lidster for Autograph, Jesus Christ Superstar was a sell-out in 2016.

The Regent’s Park production went on to win the Evening Standard Award for Best Musical and the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. It also received a further five Olivier Award nominations, for Best Theatre Choreography, Best Lighting, Best Sound, Outstanding Achievement in Music and Best Actor in a Musical (for Tyrone Huntley). The production is due to open at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in April next year.

Launching later this month, the 2017 Open Air Theatre season opens with On the Town (19 May-1 July), directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie. The cast includes Danny Mac, Fred Haig, Samuel Edwards (replacing Jeremy Taylor who has withdrawn due to injury), Siena Kelly, Lizzy Connolly, Miriam-Teak Lee, Naoko Mori, Mark Heenehan, Rodney Earl Clarke and Maggie Steed.
