This summer’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s groundbreaking musical Jesus Christ Superstar opened this week. Here, Musical Theatre Review’s official photographer Roy Tan presents a gallery of exclusive images.
The show Jesus, portrayed by singer-songwriter Declan Bennett, is joined by Tyrone Huntley as Judas, Anoushka Lucas as Mary Magdelene, David Thaxton as Pilate, Cavin Cornwall as Caiaphas, Peter Caulfield as Herod, Phil King as Peter, Joel Harper-Jackson as Simon Zealotes and Sean Kingsley as Annas.
Bennett, who was the original lead in the London cast of Once, takes to the stage in the title role in Rice and Lloyd Webber’s hit show from 15 July until 27 August.
Tyrone Huntley (Judas), who has previously appeared at the Open Air Theatre in Porgy and Bess, will join the cast of the much-anticipated Savoy Theatre production of Dreamgirls later this year.
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anoushka Lucas (Mary Magdelene) won the Jazz FM Love Supreme competition in 2013 and played piano and percussion in the band of The Lightning Child at Shakespeare’s Globe and collaborated with Ché Walker on The Etienne Sisters at Stratford East.
An Olivier Award winner for Passion, David Thaxton (Pilate) has appeared as both Enjoiras and Javert in Les Misérables and recently featured in the new musical Only The Brave.
Cavin Cornwall returns to the role (Caiaphas) he previously played on the UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. He also originally played Peter in the 1999 film version and has appeared as Billy Flynn in Chicago and Crown in Porgy and Bess.
The new production’s Herod, Peter Caulfield has appeared in One Man, Two Guvnors and the Royal Opera House’s Into the Woods.
Phil King (Peter) composed the music for, and appeared in, the venue’s To Kill a Mockingbird and appeared on stage in Jane Eyre.
Joel Harper-Jackson (Simon Zealotes) was an original cast member of Beautiful and has played Che in Evita; and Sean Kingsley (Annas) has appeared in touring productions of Jersey Boys and Rent.
Also joining the company are Ashley Andrews, Will Barratt, Billy Cullum, Joshua Dever, Omari Douglas, Simon Hardwick, Raquel Jones, Bobbie Little, Sinead Long, Gloria Obianyo, Joseph Prouse, Charlotte Riby, Cameron Sharp, Barnaby Thompson, Rhys Whitfield, and The Soul Girls will be played by Genesis Lynea, Rosa O’Reilly and Shanay Holmes.
Celebrating 45 years since Jesus Christ Superstar first hit the stage, the Regent’s Park production is directed by artistic director Timothy Sheader. Musical direction is by Tom Deering (Made in Dagenham, From Here to Eternity); design by Tom Scutt (Constellations, Les Liaisons Dangereuses); and choreography by Olivier Award winner (for In The Heights) Drew McOnie (Jekyll & Hyde). Casting is by Will Burton for David Grindrod Associates.
