Stage and screen star Kristin Chenoweth is to release a new studio album of American classics later this month.
Due for release on 23 September via Concord Records, The Art of Elegance features the Tony and Emmy award-winning star’s interpretation of 13 of the best-loved songs in the American songbook.
From George Gershwin’s haunting ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ and Rodgers and Hart’s melancholy ‘Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered’ to Bacharach and David’s ‘A House is Not a Home’, the song Chenoweth performed so memorably on the TV show Glee, the album has been produced by veteran producer Steve Tyrell.
Revealing her inspiration for the album, Chenoweth says: “Elegance is a quality that I look for, in music and in life. It goes back deep within me. I’ve always felt that even a little girl from Oklahoma could still be elegant, not just in her musical tastes, but in the way she treats others, how she dresses.
“I love all kinds of music, but this repertoire has spoken to me my whole life. I remember learning some of this music as young as 12, and thinking to myself that one day, I would get to perform it. Now here I am with a record dedicated to the melodies and lyrics of some of our greatest composers.
“It would be impossible for me not to sing. I never feel like I’m working on my next record, my next concert, my next show… It never occurred to me not to record music that I love. Even if it’s on my tape recorder. Even if it’s on my iPhone, music is life for me,” she adds.
Chenoweth, who will be seen later this year in NBC’s Hairspray Live!, sang gospel music as a child and studied opera before setting her sights on a career in musical theatre.
She made her Broadway debut in Steel Pier in 1997 and two years later won the Tony and Drama Desk awards for her performance in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Splitting her time between stage and screen, Chenoweth won an Emmy Award for her role in the romantic drama Pushing Daisies and has also appeared in a number of popular US TV series including The West Wing and Glee.
Her performance opposite Idina Menzel in the original production of Wicked won rave reviews and her most recent Broadway run was in the hit show On the Twentieth Century opposite Peter Gallagher and the star of Groundhog Day the Musical, Andy Karl.
The Art of Elegance will be Chenoweth’s sixth album release following on from Coming Home a live recording of her first TV concert marking her triumphant return to the town where she grew up, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
