Joanna Monro [pictured] and Lesley Molony will play Carla Lane’s much-loved comic creations in the world premiere in Liverpool of a new musical based on the hit TV series The Liver Birds later this month.
The West End veterans who both appeared in Mamma Mia!, will play the iconic roles of Sandra and Beryl, with their younger selves portrayed by Nicola Munns (Don Giovanni) and Julie Atherton (Avenue Q). Mark Rice-Oxley (Blood Brothers) completes the cast as Beryl’s son, Will.
For one night only the exclusive concert presentation The Liver Birds Flying Home, will land at Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre on 30 May.
With lyrics by singer/songwriter Barb Jungr and music by Level 42’s Mike Lindup, the musical features a book by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Linda McDermott and Jungr.
Directed by Sarah Tipple, the show will be presented by Olivier Award-winning producer James Seabright and leading Liverpool based promoter George Seaton.
Set in present day Liverpool, Liver Birds Flying Home will take Liverpool lasses Sandra and Beryl back to the flat they shared in the 1970s for the first time since Sandra abruptly left with no forwarding address.
The writers’ musical version of one of TV’s most popular sitcoms was given the blessing of much-loved screenwriter Lane before her death last year.
Following the concert performance, the creative team will invite audience members to share their opinions of the show to help in the next stage of the development process of the musical which will involve the world premiere of a fully staged version in the city.
