Mark Curry takes over the role of The Wizard in the West End production of Wicked on 25 March

Veteran Blue Peter presenter turned stage star Mark Curry will take over the role of The Wizard in the West End production of Wicked on 25 March.

Curry, who began his four-year stint on the much-loved BBC children’s show in 1986 has gone on to establish himself as a popular stage performer in major productions of The Rocky Horror Show, Victoria Wood’s Talent and Ray Cooney’s Out of Order.

The performer will follow in the footsteps of current Wizard, Tom McGowan, whose final performance in the role will be on 12 March, and Sean Kearns who will play the part from 14-24 March.

Already the 19th longest-running show in West End theatre history, Wicked is currently the ninth longest-running show in the West End where it has been seen by more than seven million people.

The production at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre currently stars: Emma Hatton (Elphaba), Savannah Stevenson (Glinda), Oliver Savile (Fiyero), Liza Sadovy (Madame Morrible), Sean Kearns (Doctor Dillamond), Daniel Hope (Boq), Katie Rowley Jones (Nessarose), Natalie Andreou (standby for Elphaba) and Carina Gillespie (standby for Glinda).

Based on the international best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire and adapted for the stage by Winnie Holzman, Wicked has music and lyrics by multi Grammy and Academy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Disney’s Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame). Musical staging is by Tony Award-winner Wayne Cilento and the production is directed by two-time Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello.

Now booking until 29 April 2017, Wicked is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Stage Productions, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone with executive producer (UK) Michael McCabe.
