Stage and screen stars are lining up to appear in a West End gala celebrating the 40th birthday of the National Youth Music Theatre this autumn.
ENCORE 40 Years of NYMT will feature past and present NYMT students for one special evening of entertainment at London’s Adelphi Theatre on 30 October.
The line-up of established talent already expected to perform (subject to availability) at the glittering event includes Ben Barnes, Gina Beck, Jasper Britton, Jason Robert Brown, Lily James, Toby Jones, Matt Lucas, Stuart Matthew Price, Lara Pulver, Gavin Spokes and Simon Thomas.
Directed by Michael Jibson and Jeremy James Taylor with general management by Christopher D Clegg, the show will include surprise guests, material from past successes and previews of future productions.
Announcing the West End gala show NYMT founder and previous artistic director (1976-2005) Taylor said: “Forty years have raced by. It’s been a roller coaster ride – but they say time flies when you’re having fun!”
NYMT producer Jeremy Walker added: “We may be playing an ENCORE but it’s only just the beginning! We look forward to commissioning still more great new musicals and to nurturing the next generation of musical theatre talent.”
Described by Andrew Lloyd Webber as ‘the best youth music theatre in the world’, the NYMT has produced more than 50 shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe; premiered 50 new musical theatre works; toured outside the United Kingdom; and has had runs in the West End and on Broadway.
Among the many alumni of the NYMT who have gone on to careers in the performing arts are a number of high profile stars including Jude Law (one of NYMT’s patrons), Jonny Lee Miller, Sheridan Smith, Connie Fisher, Idris Elba and Matt Lucas.
NYMT’s 2016 season will include a tour of John Rutter’s The Piper of Hamelin; the world premiere of The Battle of Boat, a new musical by Donnelly & Maltby; Spring Awakening, directed by Nikolai Foster at Curve, Leicester; and Brass, the UK Theatre award-winning musical by Benjamin Till, to be staged at Hackney Empire.
Presented by Stuart Piper and Jeremy Walker for NYMT, tickets start at £15 with the majority of tickets priced at £40 to mark the 40th anniversary.
