Kinky Boots star Matt Henry and fellow Olivier Award winner Denise Gough (People, Places and Things) will announce the nominees for this year’s Olivier Awards with Mastercard at 12 noon on Monday (6 March).
The list of nominees will be revealed in a live broadcast via Facebook.com/OlivierAwards and a Nominees Celebration event will follow on Friday 10 March at Rosewood, London.
The organisers of the awards have also revealed that stage and screen actor and director Kenneth Branagh will be presented with the coveted Special Award at this year’s ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 9 April.
The acclaimed star who has long been described as the ‘Laurence Olivier of his generation’ will pick up the prestigious award which recognises the recipient’s contribution to London theatre, 35 years after he won his first Olivier when he was named Best Newcomer.
Moving between stage and screen, Branagh has won rave reviews for his work as both an actor and director. Last year the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company played its successful inaugural West End season, receiving eight Olivier Award nominations and including three productions seen in cinemas across the world.
Commenting on the award, Caro Newling, president of the Society of London Theatre, said: “The Society of London Theatre is delighted to formally celebrate Kenneth Branagh’s outstanding contribution to London theatre. Whether acting or directing, there is no greater advocate for our industry.”
The Society of London Theatre, the organisers of the Olivier Awards, will also be presenting Special Recognition Awards to four highly-respected industry figures (Victor and Lilian Hochhauser, Richard Bullimore and Frank Dunlop) during Friday’s Nominees Celebration.
