Audiences across the world will be able to tune in to the Olivier Awards’ first red carpet live show when the stage honours make their debut at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 9 April.
Details of the innovative broadcast show, aimed at allowing theatre fans across the world to get closer to the glamour and glitter of the prestigious awards ceremony, were among plans unveiled by Mastercard and the Society of London Theatre for the 2017 campaign.
With Mastercard back on board as headline sponsor of the awards for a further three years, the organisers are promising this year’s Olivier Awards will be the biggest yet.
Nominations for the Olivier Awards 2017 with Mastercard will be broadcast via a variety of online channels and partners on Monday 6 March at 12 noon(GMT).
ITV and Magic Radio will be the official broadcast partners in the UK, while internationally the show will be broadcast on-line. The new ‘red carpet coverage’ will involve support from Facebook, allowing fans access to the interviews and exclusive content as the stars arrive for the ceremony.
Focusing on theatre’s ability to inspire, 2017 will also mark the launch of the Olivier Awards’ Be Inspired campaign which will search for six ‘Be Inspired Champions’ who have motivated others with their love and commitment to theatre.
People working in the industry, along with the theatregoing public, will be eligible and those chosen will be invited to the ceremony and be presented with their ‘Be Inspired’ plaque during the red carpet live show.
The Be Inspired campaign will be supported by Magic Radio who will be creating interviews with various industry figures and stars, discussing those people who inspired a love of theatre in them. The campaign will launch on Magic Radio tomorrow (30 January). Nominations can be submitted via olivierawards.com.
Commenting on this year’s awards campaign, Julian Bird, chief executive of SOLT and executive producer of the Olivier Awards, said: “This year we not only celebrate the best performances and shows, we will highlight theatre’s unique ability to inspire. Whether it’s front of house staff, backstage crew or drama teachers, many individuals work together to make our industry so special, and we look forward to welcoming six of the most inspiring to this year’s ceremony. We are also delighted that Mastercard will continue their support of the awards and look forward to working together as we continue to grow the show’s reach and innovate online.”
