Casting has been announced for the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of the classic Hollywood musical On the Town.
Based on a concept by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, the opening production in the venue’s 2017 season will run from 19 May to 1 July.
Strictly Come Dancing contestant Danny Mac will join recent LAMDA graduate Fred Haig, and Wicked’s Jeremy Taylor in the roles memorably played by Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin in the 1949 film.
Billed as the Regent’s Park Theatre’s ‘biggest ever dance musical’, On the Town will be directed and choreographed by the multi award-winning Drew McOnie, the choreographer of last summer’s hit production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s groundbreaking musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
The On the Town cast also includes: two recent graduates of Arts Ed, Siena Kelly and Miriam-Teak Lee making their professional West End debuts; and Lizzy Connolly (currently appearing in The Wild Party at The Other Palace) taking on the parts played by Vera-Ellen, Ann Miller and Betty Garrett in the film.
Veteran stage and screen star Maggie Steed (The School For Scandal, Bath Theatre Royal; Trelawney of the Wells, Donmar Warehouse) also features alongside Naoko Mori (Miss Saigon, Theatre Royal Drury Lane; Avenue Q, Noel Coward Theatre), Rodney Earl Clarke (The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi fan Tutte and in the title role of Don Giovanni), and Mark Heenehan (Jersey Boys, Piccadilly Theatre; Fiddler On the Roof, Grange Park Opera).
Completing the cast are: Michelle Andrews, Myles Brown, Matthew Caputo, Edward Chitticks, Lavinia Fitzpatrick, Cristina Hoey, James Leece, Jacob Maynard, Rachel Muldoon, Melissa Nettleford, Emily Ann Potter, Mollie Melia Redgrave, Lisa Ritchie, Barnaby Thompson, Sam Salter and Brandon Lee Sears.
The Regent’s Park production is designed by Peter McKintosh with musical supervision by Tom Deering, lighting design by Howard Hudson, and sound design by Nick Lidster for Autograph. The creative team also includes associate director Fiona Dunn, associate choreographer Ebony Molina, associate musical director Kevin Amos, associate director (voice and text) Barbara Houseman and casting director James Orange.
Completing the 2017 season will be the return for just 41 performances (from 11 August to 16 September) of last year’s hit production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Celebrating 45 years since the iconic show first hit the stage, the award-winning Regent’s Park production is directed by Timothy Sheader.
