With his character’s days on screen numbered, Coronation Street’s Les Dennis is preparing for a role in the Menier Chocolate Factory’s new production of the 1963 Broadway musical She Loves Me.
Former stand-up comedian and presenter turned actor Dennis will swap the cobbles of Weatherfield for the London stage when he joins the previously announced Scarlett Strallen (A Chorus Line, London Palladium) as Mr Maraczek in director Matthew White’s production which will begin previewing on 25 November.
The cast will also include Alastair Brookshaw (Sweeney Todd, ENO) as Ladislav Sipos; Callum Howells (Oliver! national tour) as Arpad Laszlo, Katherine Kingsley (Aspects of Love, Menier) as Ilona Ritter; Dominic Tighe (Charley’s Aunt, Menier) as Steven Kodaly; and Mark Umbers (Merrily We Roll Along, Harold Pinter Theatre) as Georg Nowack.
Confirmed casting also features Rachel Bingham, Peter Dukes, Luke Fetherston, Olivia Fines, Aimee Hodnett, Sarah-Marie Maxwell and Vincent Pirillo. Full casting will be announced at a later date.
The production, which reunites Strallen and White who previously worked together on the Menier’s production of Candide, opens on 2 December and will run until 5 March 2017.
Based on a play by Miklos Laszlo, with a book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, She Loves Me premiered on Broadway in 1963.
With the same source material as the films The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail, the multi award-winning She Loves Me is the romantic story of two perfume shop assistants who are each unaware that they are secret pen pals.
The show’s West End premiere in 1964 was followed 30 years later by an Olivier Award-winning revival in 1994 starring Ruthie Henshall, Tracie Bennett and John Gordon Sinclair. A Broadway revival earlier this year starred Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski and Zachary Levi.
White heads a creative team that includes choreographer Rebecca Howell, music supervisor Catherine Jayes, set and costume designer Paul Farnsworth, lighting designer Paul Pyant and sound designer Greg Clarke, with orchestrations by Jason Carr.
