Sondheim’s Road Show revived at the Union Theatre

4625257922The Union Theatre and the Phil Willmott Company are presenting the first UK revival of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Road Show from 3 February to 5 March 2016 (press nights are Wednesday 10 February and Thursday 11 February).

At the turn of the last century old Pa Meisner sends his sons, the charming and ruthless Wilson and the thoughtful, unambitious Addison off to make their fortune. The ill-matched pair embark on the story of their lifetime across the US, stopping off at some of the key moments which shaped modern America. A moving story of love, antagonism and reconciliation between two brothers, events in Road Show mirror a mighty nation in transition.

Prominently featuring a romance between Addison and an idealistic young male artist, Road Show also includes Sondheim’s first openly gay characters and one of his most haunting love songs, notably sung by one man to another.

The cast includes: Howard Jenkins (Addison Meisner), Andre Refig (Wilson Meisner), Steve Watts (Pappa Meisner), Cathryn Sherman (Mamma Meisner) and Joshua LeClaire (Hollis); with Cameron Hay, Amy Perry, Amy Reitsma, Phil Sealey, Laura Jade Clark, Damian Robinson, Sam Sugarman, Alexander McMoran, Jonny Rust and Christina Thornton.

Road Show is the latest production in the Union’s long association with the musicals of Stephen Sondheim. It is director Phil Willmott’s first production of the celebrated composer/lyricist’s work following an acclaimed revival of Finian’s Rainbow which transferred to central London and the transfer from Liverpool Playhouse of his own musical Once Upon a Time At the Adelphi.

Also in the creative team are musical director Richard Baker, choreographer Thomas Michael Voss, casting director Adam Braham, set/costume designer Jessica Phillips, lighting designer Jack Weir, sound designer James Nicholson and producer Sasha Regan.

For a limited time the Union Theatre is offering the chance to book tickets for two of three collaborations with the Phil Willmott Company this year – Fears and Miseries of the Third Reich and Road Show – at the all-inclusive price of £30. Book on 020 7261 9876 (subject to availability).

Road Show had its London premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2011, directed by John Doyle.
