Will.i.am’s protégé from this year’s The Voice, Lucy O’Byrne will step into the iconic role of Maria in Bill Kenwright’s new touring production of The Sound of Music in December.
The former theatre usher will swap the stalls for centre stage when she plays the leading role in Kenwright’s staging of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.
One of the most talked about contestants on the BBC One show, O’Byrne became the first classical singer to reach the TV show’s final and narrowly missed out on the top spot. Her casting as Maria follows on from a well-received performance at the BBC Proms.
The Dubliner will make her debut as Maria at The Broadway, Peterborough on 2 December. Directed by Martin Connor and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Bill Deamer, with musical direction by David Steadman, the production coincides with the 50th anniversary of the much-loved film version.
