This autumn, Lauren Samuels (Bend it Like Beckham, BBC’s Over the Rainbow, Grease), Ashleigh Gray (Wicked, Cool Rider) and Lizzy Connolly (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Xanadu) star in the European debut of Vanities. The brand new production, which plays at London’s Trafalgar Studios from 1 September to 1 October) features never before seen material with all new direction and choreography from Racky Plews (Footloose, American Idiot).
Following acclaimed runs in Seattle, Houston, New York, and Los Angeles, Vanities makes its London debut for the 10th anniversary of the musical (book by Jack Heifner and music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum) and 40th anniversary of the play.
Vanities is described as a hilarious and heartfelt story about three best friends growing up in Dallas at a time when image and style were more important than brains and ambition. Through an original score that blends girl group harmonies of the 1960s and 70s with contemporary musical theatre, the musical explores how these women’s warped views of the world shaped them for better and worse.
It’s time to go back to 1963 and watch Mary, Kathy and Joanne obsess over their cheerleader routines, choose their sororities, plan their wedding outfits – because even though the President has been shot and America’s on the brink of a war, if the girls just stay popular and don’t lose their looks everything will be okay… right?
Heifner (book) and Kirshenbaum (music and lyrics) comment: “On the 40th anniversary of the play Vanities, there’s no better gift than having the musical version of the play open in London. This isn’t just an American musical. It is a look into the lives of three girls who see nothing deeper than their reflection in the mirror.
“Given the wrong set of rules to live by, they find they are unprepared for the journey into a world that puts value on much more than just appearances. We’re thrilled that this show is finally being produced in London but moreover, that it’s happening with these producers, this creative team, and this cast.”
Joining director/choreographer Racky Plews are designer Andrew Riley, sound designer James Nicholson, lighting designer Tim Deiling and musical director Tamara Saringer. Vanities is presented by Matt Chisling and Amy Anzel, in association with Aria Entertainment.
