CD Review – Enraptured – Helen Power

ENRAPTURED – HELEN POWER (Auburn Jam Music – POW01)

Helen Power may be a name you are not entirely familiar with up to now. She is a crossover soprano and actor-musician with a background in musical theatre in London’s West End and several UK tours including Sunset Boulevard, Chess, Chicago and Thoroughly Modern Millie. She has also performed all over the world as a soprano soloist with classical crossover group Bravo Amici.

Now she has released her first album entitled Enraptured, produced at Auburn Jam Music by Joe Davison. Power not only sings on the album with some guest artists, but she also plays trumpet and flugelhorn on certain of the tracks.

Power has a lovely voice and, overall, the tracks are more hit than miss. What I really admire about this album is that the old favourites like The Sound of Music and The Phantom of the Opera have been given some new arrangements which make them stand out from all the other copycat versions that other artists usually churn out.

Although the majority of tracks are from musicals, this is more an easy listening album including new arrangements of ‘Ave Maria’ and a delightful surprise in the shape of the Abba song ‘Thank You For the Music’.

Certainly one for the ‘must have’ list. A lady of many talents.
