The Neverending Story Part Two: The Battle of the Ivory Tower continues at the Theater der Jugend, Vienna until 24 June.
Following the success of The Neverending Story Part One last autumn, the entire creative team and cast led by director Henry Mason (who previously directed many productions for the Theater der Jugend) is back with the second instalment, which is probably one of the most thrilling theatre experiences in town at the moment.
In the second part of Mason’s stage adaptation (he directed and adapted the piece), Bastian Balthazar Bux (played with great depth by Stefan Rosenthal) has to save Fantasia with the help of his new powers, particularly the one which enables him to wish for whatever he wants. He makes new friends and enemies on the way, learns from his mistakes and eventually finds his way back home.
The production consists of a large cast, all of which play solidly. In addition to Rosenthal, Lynne Williams as Urgl and Doris Prilop as Princess Oglamar are amongst the highlights acting wise. I must also add that Prilop demonstrates her vocal abilities too. It is a shame that she isn’t given more to sing.
Mason, with help of the Celtic-inspired music by Zaufke, the choreography by Lorna Dawson, sets and costumes by Jan Meier and Ingrid Erb and lighting design by Christian Holerny (as well as great stage fighting scenes coached by Mel Stein), manage to create a wonderful production that really takes you into a different world that you never really want to leave.

The Neverending Story Part Two continues until 24 June 2014.
