Urinetown the Musical transfers to the West End

Director Jamie Lloyd’s critically acclaimed production of Urinetown the Musical will transfer to the Apollo Theatre, running from 29 September 2014. With music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, Urinetown had its UK premiere earlier this year at the St James Theatre.

Director Lloyd said: “Having attracted a diverse audience of all ages at the St. James earlier this year, I’m bursting to bring our production of this brilliantly off-kilter musical comedy to the West End, where I hope we’ll make an even bigger splash. I’m delighted to return to the Apollo Theatre – the perfect home for our energetic and anarchic cast to run riot in. So, a big thank you to Nica Burns.”

Urinetown the Musical originally ran on Broadway from 2001 until 2004 and was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning for Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction. In addition, it also won three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, two Obie Awards and the Drama League Award for Best Musical.

Lloyd’s musical theatre credits include The Commitments (Palace Theatre), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Passion (Donmar) and Piaf (Donmar, also Vaudeville/Teatro Liceo, Buenos Aires/Nuevo Teatro Alcala, Madrid). Lloyd was associate director of the Donmar from 2008 to 2011 and associate artist of Headlong. He will direct and is co-writing Back to The Future – The Musical in 2015.
