Following the announcement that Frank Loesser’s 1961 musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying will be making its live in concert debut this May, the second in the Southbank series has been revealed as Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Of Thee I Sing, being staged at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 31 July.
Presented by leading independent concert promoter, Senbla, the classic 1931 musical was written by arguably one of the greatest songwriting duos of all time, George and Ira Gershwin, the result being a musical comedy masterpiece with witty songs, fantastic lyrics and beautiful melodies.
Ollie Rosenblatt, producer and MD of Senbla said: “What better year to bring to the Royal Festival Hall stage Of Thee I Sing. Politics, great music, this was one of the Gershwins’ masterpieces, and reminds us why these writers remains as relevant today as they ever did.”
Reimagined as a live concert experience with a full orchestra, the story (book by George S Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind) centres on American politics and is a satirical look at a political party’s idea of how to win an election. Focusing on John P Wintergreen who is running for president, the show deals with political idealism, corruption, love and their impact not only on domestic relations, but international ones too.
