A casting update has been announced for the world premiere of the new musical A Pacifist’s Guide to the War on Cancer in September.
Directed by Bryony Kimmings, who also co-wrote the book with Brian Lobel and also provides the lyrics set to Tom Parkinson’s music, the show features a cast including Naana Agyei-Ampadu, Amy Booth-Steel, Hal Fowler, Amanda Hadingue, Akiya Henry, Golda Rosheuvel, Rose Shalloo, Gareth Snook and Gary Wood.
A Complicite Associates co-production with the National Theatre in association with HOME Manchester, A Pacifist’s Guide to the War on Cancer will debut at HOME from 20-24 September. The show will then play Exeter Northcott Theatre from 28 September-2 October before ending its run at the National Theatre from 14 October until 29 November.
The first Complicite Associates co-production, the show is the result of a meeting between Complicite producer Judith Dimat and Kimmings after Dimat had seen Kimmings’ creation, Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model.
Performance artist, comedian and writer Kimmings explains: “The whole idea was sparked from a conversation I had with Judith at Complicite, who at the time was going through cancer. If this musical does one thing, it will be to crack open the metaphors and language we use around the disease and see what really lies beneath. With glitter.”
Dimat added: “Bryony’s work is brilliantly fearless. We wanted to help her make that work on a larger scale, and so we’re thrilled to be launching the Complicite Associates programme together. With Brian Lobel and Tom Parkinson, she’s confronting the reality of life with cancer in a show that I know will be gut-wrenching, irreverent and rather extraordinary.”
The show’s creative team also includes set designer Lucy Osborne, costume designer Christina Cunningham, musical director Marc Tritschler, choreographer Lizzi Gee, lighting designer Paul Anderson and sound designer Lewis Gibson.
