Rob Winlow’s celebration of one of Britain’s greatest writers, Austen The Musical has embarked on a UK tour.
Previously performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the new production of the musical that explores the life of Jane Austen is directed by Timothy Trimingham Lee with musical direction by Arlene McKnaught.
Commenting on his inspiration for the show, writer Winlow said: “The starting point and the question we ask, and ultimately try to answer, in the show, is how come Jane Austen wrote so eloquently about romantic affairs when she had seemingly few loving relationships and never married?”
Featuring Edith Kirkwood (Peculiar Distractions, York Theatre Royal) in the title role, the cast also includes Thomas Hewitt (Fantastic Mr Fox, Lyric Hammersmith and tour) as the romantic novelist’s suitors and Jenni Lea-Jones (The Mikado, Illyria Theatre national tour) and Adam Grayson (TV’s Jonathan Creek) who play Jane’s parents.
The tour, which began at Birmingham’s Old Joint Stock Theatre, plays The Bread & Roses Theatre in London from 16-20 January before heading for London’s Mirth, Marvel & Maud Theatre (22-24 January); Stamford Corn Exchange (25 January); the East Riding Theatre in Beverley (26 & 27 January); Artix, Bromsgrove (8 February); Rothes Hall, Fife (27 & 28 February); Harborough Theatre (7 March); and Chesil Theatre, Winchester (28 & 29 March).
