Plans for an early 2019 return to the West End for critically-acclaimed musical SIX have been announced just a few days before the end of the show’s current extended London run.
Due to end its season at Covent Garden’s Arts Theatre on 14 October, the rock-flavoured show in which the wives of Henry VIII take centre stage will return to the venue in the New Year for an open-ended run.
Over 50,000 seats will go on sale on Friday (5 October) for an initial six-week season from Wednesday 16 January until Sunday 5 May 2019.
Written by university friends Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the musical which was nominated in 2017 for Musical Theatre Review’s inaugural Best Musical Award, puts the spotlight on the Tudor King’s wives as they form a 21st-century girl band. The show’s current run follows a successful return visit to the Edinburgh Fringe and a well-received four date London run in January.
Following the West End season, the touring production will visit Kingston’s Rose Theatre (31 October-4 November), Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre (13-17 November), The Lowry, Salford (4-16 December), and Glasgow SEC (20-30 December).
Presented by Kenny Wax and Global Musicals, the show which features tracks including ‘Ex Wives’, ‘Haus of Holbein’ and ‘Don’t Lose Ur Head’, is directed by co-creator Moss and Jamie Armitage.
The creative team also includes choreographer Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and musical supervisor Joe Beighton, with set design by Emma Bailey, costume design by Gabriella Slade, lighting design by Tim Deiling, sound design by Paul Gatehouse and orchestrations by Tom Curran.
SIX is the first musical from Marlow and Moss, two-thirds of the award-winning theatre company Hot Gay Time Machine whose satirical show Hot Gay Time Machine was also a hit at last year’s Fringe before playing a sold-out run at The Other Palace earlier this year. The show is due to play a Christmas season at Trafalgar Studio 2 in Whitehall later this year.
