CBBC regular Jade Johnson has won a leading role in the world premiere of Mexican-flavoured musical Club Mex at Manchester’s award-winning Hope Mill Theatre after initially auditioning via Instagram.
The World’s End star will play bride to be Mel alongside Alison Arnopp (Eugenius! The Other Palace, Dusty, Charing Cross Theatre) and Emma Louise Hoey (Wizard of Oz, King Arthur, The Scoop) as her two best friends Tiff and Lou.
Bradley Conner (ITV’s Unforgotten) will play Mel’s future husband Graham, with Alvaro Flores (We Are Arrested, Day of the Living, Royal Shakespeare Company) and Royal Academy of Music graduate Jeremy Sartori as Club Reps Antonio and Josh. Ensemble/covers will be Jonathan Cordin (Bat Out of Hell – The Musical) and Jessica Shaw who has yet to graduate from Manchester’s Arden School of Theatre.
The second new musical from Global Musicals, the producers of current West End hit Six, will play the Ancoats’ venue from 17 January until 10 February 2019.
Featuring a script by leading stand-up comedian Tamar Broadbent, the part-immersive, part-musical clubbing experience mixes pop, dance and musical theatre in an original score by composer and music producer John-Victor. Directed by West End favourite Julie Atherton, the coming-of-age comedy set on the dancefloors of the Mexican resort of Cancun. Commenting on her long-term involvement in the project, Avenue Q star Atherton said: “When the guys at Perfect Pitch first approached me to get involved, I knew it was an idea I wanted to play with and explore how involved the audience could be.
“After a workshop last year at Edge Hill university we soon realised audiences are very happy to be in the heart of where the action takes place and this piece allows them to do just that.”
