The classic British musical Me and My Girl is being performed this summer in a Big Top tent overlooking the beautiful British seaside at Frinton-on-Sea in Essex. This location is particularly apt for such a nostalgic musical which was first performed in the West End in 1937.

Set in the 1930s, the show of course tells the story of Bill Snibson (Josh Andrews), a cockney ‘bloke’ from Lambeth, who discovers that he is the long lost Earl of Hareford and heir to a great fortune.

He must prove he can be the proper gentleman required to run the Hareford estate, and as a result his relationship with Sally Smith (Eleanor Jackson) is called into question. The audience follows Bill’s attempts to win over his new high-class family in order to receive his inheritance.

This is an incredibly nostalgic production with songs such as ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’ and ‘The Lambeth Walk’ (music by Noel Gay/lyrics by Douglas Furber and L Arthur Rose) bringing smiles to the audience’s faces.

Performed by an energetic cast, Aimee Leigh’s choreography incorporates classic British games such as croquet, egg and spoon races and tug of war, again adding to the overall nostalgic feel.

This is a light-hearted production, directed by Ben Stock, with plenty of crowd participation. It is clear that the cast is hugely enjoying themselves whilst performing this musical and that only adds to the overall enjoyment of the audience.
