There will be a touch more romance in London’s West End next Valentine’s Day, when Pretty Woman: The Musical begins previewing at the Piccadilly Theatre.
Following a Broadway run that ended last month (August), the musical based on the much-loved 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman will head over to this side of the Atlantic to play a strictly limited 46-week run from 14 February 2020.
Tickets will go on sale on Friday (13 September) for the production which is directed and choreographed by double Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell and produced by Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Paula Wagner, Nice Productions, and LPO. Casting will be announced at a later date.
Featuring music by multi-award-winning rock star Bryan Adams and his songwriting partner Jim Vallance, the stage musical version of the modern Cinderella story boasts a book co-written by the original film’s director, the late Garry Marshall and screenwriter J.F. Lawton.
Confirming details of the London run on behalf of Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Adam Speers said: “The West End loves a big night out and none come bigger than this new production re-telling the iconic and much-loved movie. The UK has rocked to the legendary work of Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance for decades and we cannot wait to welcome audiences to the show.”
The show’s producer Paula Wagner added: “It is really wonderful that UK audiences will get to experience Pretty Woman: The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre next year. Bryan and Jim’s original score for the show brings an electric new dimension to Garry Marshall and J.F. Lawton’s beloved film.
“We were so fortunate to have Garry working with J.F. on the book of the show. They really captured the essence of Pretty Woman, and along with Jerry’s skilful direction and choreography, this classic love story really has become a great night out at the theatre. Next year also marks 30 years since the release of the film, and I can’t think of a better place than the Piccadilly Theatre to celebrate!”

Pretty Woman: The Musical features scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and Philip S. Rosenberg, sound design by John Shivers, hair design by Josh Marquette, with music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by Will Van Dyke.
Pretty Woman: The Musical received its world premiere in Chicago in March 2018 ahead of its Broadway debut in August 2018. Britain’s Samantha Barks (Les Misérables) made her Broadway debut in the coveted title role alongside US TV star Steve Kazee (Shameless, Nashville) whose last appearance on Broadway in Once had earned him a Tony Award.
The romantic comedy that captured the imagination of cinema audiences across the world famously featured a career-launching performance from Julia Roberts. A relative unknown when she won the role, Roberts had co-starred in the low budget cult favourite Mystic Pizza and completed a supporting role in the, at the time, unreleased Steel Magnolias. She was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her performance in the film. As well as turning Roberts into Hollywood’s newest leading lady the film helped revitalise Richard Gere’s career which had stalled somewhat following the critical and audience success of American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman.
