Just months after the critically acclaimed Dreamgirls took its final bow at the Savoy Theatre, Sonia Friedman Productions has announced the first details of the hit show’s first UK tour.
Launching at the Bristol Hippodrome from 12 September until 3 October 2020, the touring version of the award-winning production which lit up London’s Savoy Theatre for over two years, will visit Milton Keynes (6-17 October 2020), Blackpool (27 October-7 November 2020), Aberdeen (10-21 November 2020), Edinburgh (24 November-5 December 2020) and Birmingham (8 December-2 January 2021). Further venues for 2021 will be announced at a later date.
Directed and choreographed by Olivier and Tony award-winning Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Disney’s Aladdin), Dreamgirls debuted in the West End in December 2016, 35 years after the multi-award-winning show’s Broadway premiere.
Featuring book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger with additional material by Willie Reale, the 1981 original Broadway production of Dreamgirls was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett. The production won six Tony Awards, and the original cast recording won the Grammy Awards for Best Musical Album and Best Vocal Performance for Jennifer Holliday’s showstopping ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’.
In 2006 it was adapted into an Oscar-winning motion picture starring Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx, and featured a star-making and Oscar-winning performance from Jennifer Hudson.
With casting for the UK tour to be announced soon, the production’s creative team includes set and costume designer Tim Hatley, with lighting design is by Hugh Vanstone, hair design by Josh Marquette and music supervision by Nick Finlow.
