Michael D Xavier and Kimberley Walsh will take the lead in three pre-Christmas preview performances of Sleepless, A Musical Romance at the newly opened Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.
The reduced-price previews on Friday 13 December (evening) and Saturday 14 December (matinee and evening) will offer a taster for the long-awaited world premiere run of the musical based on Nora Ephron’s much-loved movie Sleepless In Seattle.
Xavier (Sunset Boulevard, London Coliseum, Into The Woods, Regent’s Park Theatre) will play single father Sam opposite former Girls Aloud favourite Walsh (Shrek The Musical, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Big The Musical, Dominion Theatre) as lovelorn journalist Annie. The cast for the December shows will also include Soo Drouet as Becky, Gay Soper as Eleanor, Alex Fobbester as Rob, Dylan Turner as Walter, Vicki Davids as Suzy, Michael Carolan as Gregg, and Jobe Hart as Jonah, with Charlie Bull, Charlotte Gale, Matt Holland, Joanna Rennie, Tyler Smith and Annette Yeo.
With a book by Michael Burdett, and music and lyrics by new British writers Robert Scott and Brendan Cull, the production which will be directed Morgan Young (Big The Musical, Elf The Musical) will return to the Troubadour for its full London run from 21 March 2020.
The creative for the production also includes set design by Morgan Large, costume design by Sue Simmerling, lighting by Tim Lutkin, video design by Ian William Galloway, sound design by Avgoustos Psillas and Terry Jardine for Autograph, orchestrations by Larry Blank, musical supervision and direction by Stuart Morley, wig and hair design by Richard Mawbey and casting by Sarah Bird and Michael Donovan. The general manager will be David Pearson.
Presented by Michael Rose, Encore Theatre Productions Ltd and David Shor, in association with Marc Toberoff, the musical love story is based on the second film to feature the popular romantic pairing of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
The musical was originally due to make its debut at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal in April 2017 with Danny Mac and Carley Stenson in the leading roles, but the show’s debut run was cancelled just two months before the opening night with the team citing ‘illness within the producer’s family and overwhelming unexpected circumstances’.
