Self-isolating? At a loose end? To quote the final line of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Move On’ from Sunday in the Park With George: give us more to see. Welcome to our new initiative: MTR CREATIVE CONNECTIONS.
Times are hard for many people in our creative industries right now. Frankly, being a bit bored while conscience and the law forces you to stay indoors is far from the biggest issue facing the world. But, if you’re a musical theatre creative, at least you have an obvious solution.
Producers and directors, how would you like to receive as many new musical theatre scripts and demos as you can possibly handle? Writers, how would you like to get your new work before the eyes and ears of experienced MT professionals who could offer advice or even future collaboration?
At Musical Theatre Review we want to use our position as a leading MT platform to enable our followers and supporters to forge new connections during this time of hardship, in the hope this may result in new work emerging from the chaos. We intend to do this by collecting the email addresses of interested producers/directors to whom we can forward scripts and demos from any new writers who get in touch.
Some generous producers have already put out a similar call on their Twitter accounts, but we would like to put MTR’s extensive market reach (both online and on social media) at their disposal to recruit as many participants as possible.
Producers/directors, if you would like to receive some brand new musical theatre writing, please send an email to info@musicaltheatrereview.com with the word PRODUCER in the subject line.
Writers, if you have a piece of new musical theatre you would like to get into the eyes and ears of potential future collaborators, please send an email to info@musicaltheatrereview.com with WRITER and the title of your show in the subject line.
Make sure you include the script and demo recordings as attachments or SoundCloud links.
We would encourage all who read and listen to the new writing to take a moment to send a quick email of thanks and feedback to the writers. If you fall in love with a show and wish to discuss potential further development, then even better.
For us here at MTR it’s the chance to help create opportunity in the midst of a crisis and allows us to continue promoting the cause of musical theatre. And in the not too distant future when our theatres reopen, maybe we’ll be reviewing the opening night of your production which began with this initiative.
Don’t delay, it could prove to be the break you need or the show you’ve been waiting for… and keep musical theatre alive through this crisis!
That email address again: info@musicaltheatrereview.com.
Keep safe everyone.
