Dear Evan Hansen tops the bill at Mousetrap Awards

Dear Evan Hansen was the big winner at the ninth annual Mousetrap Awards as the UK’s only theatre awards run by and for young people moved online as the lockdown continues.

The Broadway hit that opened at London’s Noel Coward Theatre in November last year, collected four awards with actors Sam Tutty and Rebecca McKinnis, writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and videographer Peter Nigrini appearing during the ceremony on YouTube.

Accepting the Soundtrack of My Soul Award, Justin Paul said: “It means so much to us that this award is voted on by young people, and this organisation means so much to us that it brings theatre to young people who need to see theatre who might not be able to see it otherwise.”

Presented by Mousetraps Theatre Projects’ Youth Forum, this year’s Mousetrap Awards attracted a record-breaking number of votes with over 3,300 15-29 year olds casting their votes for their favourite shows from 2019.

The ceremony featured performances from some of the young people who Mousetrap has reached during lockdown through its #EveryHomeATheatre project. This included Nansi Love, who was chosen by Mousetrap’s patron Eddie Redmayne as the winner of its monologue competition; Madeleine Morgan, who was named the winner of Mousetrap’s musical theatre singing competition by Wicked and Come From Away star Rachel Tucker; and Alex and Jobe Hart, who entered their Dance Through the Ages piece for Mousetrap’s #EveryHomeATheatre dance challenge.

Mousetrap Theatre Projects is a theatre education charity dedicated to bringing the magic of theatre into the lives of young people. It opens the doors to all that London’s vibrant theatre scene has to offer – particularly for young people with limited means, support or special needs – and encourages participants to engage creatively with their theatre experiences.
