Toy Soldier Productions’ James Beeny and Gina Georgio have released a music video featuring acclaimed actress and singer Kerry Ellis performing a song from their new musical Lady M.
Stepping into the role of Shakespeare’s villainous Lady Macbeth, Ellis’ performance of ‘What Must Be Done’ has been produced by Beeny and Georgio alongside multi Grammy Award-winning producer Rik Simpson.
The musical which underwent its second development workshop in December last year, re-imagines the Scottish Play as a contemporary musical with Macbeth’s scheming wife at the heart of the action.
Directed by Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy, Ellis featured in the workshop cast that included George Blagden (Company, Gielgud Theatre), Phoebe Fildes (Assassins, Watermill Theatre), Robert Hands (Come From Away, Phoenix Theatre), Jamie Muscato (Heathers, The Other Palace/Theatre Royal Haymarket), Maiya Quansah-Breed (Six, Arts Theatre/UK tour) and Karl Queensborough (Hamilton, Victoria Palace Theatre).
Blagden and Queensborough also featured alongside Earl Carpenter (The Phantom of the Opera, Her Majesty’s Theatre) and Bradley Jaden (Wicked, West End/international tour) on the music video for the show’s opening number ‘Mother Scotland’ which was released on YouTube last year.
Toy Soldier Productions was founded in 2020 by the musical theatre writing partnership of Beeny and Georgio. The duo’s first musical theatre production, the First World War-set The Dreamers debuted in workshop form in 2018 at the Victoria Palace Theatre followed by four fully staged workshop performances at London’s famous Abbey Road Studios. The Dreamers workshops were also directed by Van Der Spuy. In 2020, Beeny and Georgio brought together The Frontline Singers, a choral group made up of key workers, who remotely recorded an original song. The group recently performed on Britain’s Got Talent, receiving four ‘yes’ votes from the judging panel.
