Star Trek legend George Takei will make his London stage debut in the UK premiere of Broadway musical George Takei’s Allegiance at London’s Charing Cross Theatre in early 2023.
Inspired by the actor’s true childhood experiences in the US in the aftermath of Pearl Harbour when Japanese Americans were placed in internment camps, the original award-winning production has been re-worked for the UK with a new and more intimate production conceived for the Off-West End Charing Cross Theatre space.
Running from 7 January until 8 April 2023, the production which will be directed and choreographed by Tara Overfield Wilkinson, will feature Takei alongside his Broadway co-star Telly Leung (Aladdin, Broadway, Glee).
First seen in a record-breaking production at The Old Globe Theatre in San Deigo in 2012 before playing a Broadway run in 2015/2016, Allegiance has a book by Marc Acito, Jay Kuo, and Lorenzo Thione with music and lyrics by Jay Kuo.
Commenting on the show, Takei said: “Allegiance is a story from America’s past, but it has great relevance today. Once again, fascism is on the march, and whole communities are under attack. Again, the freedoms so many take for granted are gravely imperilled. Allegiance is my legacy. We must learn the lessons of our past so that we may never repeat them. That’s why we tell our story. That’s why I’ve dedicated my life to ensuring we collectively honour the commitment, ‘Never again’.”
Produced by Sing Out, Louise Productions, with general management by Something For The Weekend, the UK premiere production will also feature musical supervision and orchestrations by Andrew Hilton and Charlie Ingles, lighting design by Nic Farman, sound design by Chris Whybrow and casting by Sarah Leung Casting.
