The world premiere of a musical marking 20 years since the repeal of the infamous Section 28 features in the spring 2023 reopening programme at London’s New Diorama Theatre.
Commissioned by New Diorama, After The Act A Section 28 Musical is the latest work from multi-award-winning NDT associates Breach.
Co-produced by New Diorama, Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival, HOME and Warwick Arts Centre and supported by the Arts Council, the production which celebrates one of the key turning points in British LGBTQ+ history will play the 80-seat theatre close to Regent’s Park from 28 February until 1 April 2023.
The season will also include an encore run for director Katie Mitchell’s acclaimed ensemble production little scratch. Adapted from Rebecca Watson’s debut novel, the show which follows the life of a woman across a single day is written by Miriam Battye with a score by Melanie Wilson. Presented by New Diorama, the Hampstead Theatre production will run from 12 April until 13 May.
Unveiling details of the new season, artistic director David Byrne said: “A new Breach musical, Katie Mitchell and biting the hand that feeds us – it’s a season that every artistic director dreams of. Our team has worked hard to keep prices affordable, with every ticket under £20 and £3 previews for anyone unemployed or taking part in strikes. We can’t wait to welcome back London’s most adventurous theatre-goers. We’ve missed you, so get booking!”
The winner of The Stage’s 2022 Fringe Theatre of the Year Award, New Diorama closed in the late summer last year for The Stage innovation award-nominated intervention 01. The stated aim of the initiative which involved leaving the theatre dark, was “to break the current short-term programming and development cycles that are exhausting artists and stifling creative risk”.
