Miriam Nyarko (Our Town, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) will lead the cast of the new family-friendly musical The Lost Spells, based on writer Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris’ best-selling book.
The actor and R&B singer/songwriter who made her West End debut at the age of 10 as Nala in The Lion King will star alongside Jonathan Charles (War Horse, National Theatre/UK tour), Toby De Salis (Whistle Down the Wind, UK tour), Paula James (Our Man in Havana, Watermill Theatre) and Lucy Yates (Jonny Feathers the Rock and Roll Pigeon , Park Theatre/Riverside Studios).
Co-produced by Goblin Theatre, Watford Palace Theatre, Polka Theatre and Theatre By The Lake, the production features music and lyrics by Mary Erskine and Will Dollard and a book by Matt Borgatti.
Commenting on the production, Goblin Theatre’s creative producer Borgatti said: “We’re so excited to be bringing this magical book by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris to life, in the form of a new musical. The words and illustrations have captured the imagination of a huge number of people, and working with an exciting creative team and co-producing venues, the show will be a totally unique experience full of fun, magic and incredible live music.
“It’s all about a reconnection to the nature around us – be that in the city or the countryside, so that we can love and celebrate it, before it’s lost forever. This feels especially timely to young people in the current climate.”
Director Andy Barry heads a creative team that includes designer Hannah Sibai, lighting designer Sherry Coenen, with show artwork illustrations by Jackie Morris Show and artwork designed by Rebecca Pitt.
The production will debut at the Watford Palace Theatre from 20 March until 8 April 2023, before heading for Wimbledon’s Polka Theatre (13 April-7 May) and Theatre By The Lake in the heart of the Lake District (24 May-4 June).
