Double Tony Award-winning writer Joe DiPietro’s (Memphis The Musical, What’s New Pussycat?) musical tribute to one of the 2oth century’s most legendary entertainers – Frank Sinatra – will make its West End debut in June.
Directed by triple Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes, The Pyjama Game), Sinatra The Musical will begin performances at the Adelphi Theatre on 3 June.
Looking forward to the musical’s West End debut, Frank Sinatra’s daughter Tina said: “My dad used to always say, ‘If I can’t feel it, I can’t sing it’. As a result, he wasn’t just singing songs, he was recording an emotional diary of his life. And it’s these classic songs that form the heart of Sinatra The Musical. Set against the backdrop of my father’s meteoric rise, the show reveals a more intimate portrait of the man than any interview or headline ever could. And just like my dad, it’s full of music and passion and humour. I am so proud to share his story – our story – at long last.”
Marshall added: “I am beyond thrilled that we are bringing to the stage the extraordinary story of how Frank Sinatra’s incredible persistence in the face of adversity led to his becoming the astonishing artist that we all adore and admire. We look forward to creating an evening of theatre that is as sophisticated, stylish and sexy as Sinatra himself!”
The story of the New Jersey born son of Italian immigrants who became one of the biggest stars in the world was first seen in a sell-out season at Birmingham Rep in 2013.
Sinatra’s extensive catalogue of timeless tracks from decades of recordings forms the musical accompaniment to the story of the man and the legendary artist. Sinatra The Musical is the first in a series of new projects and initiatives developed by Frank Sinatra Enterprises in partnership with Universal Music Group aimed at introducing new audiences to Sinatra’s life and artistic legacy.
