The full cast has been confirmed for the eagerly anticipated Birmingham Rep production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s multi-award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
As previously announced West End and Broadway star Ramin Karimloo (Love Never Dies, Les Misérables) will star as Sweeney Todd alongside award-winning Australian-born artist Meow Meow as Mrs Lovett and triple Olivier Award winner David Bedella (& Juliet, In The Heights, Jerry Springer: The Opera) as Judge Turpin.
They will be joined by Shem Omari James (Jesus Christ Superstar, Dreamgirls, UK tour) as Anthony Hope, Jo Stephenson (Les Misérables, world tour, The Pirate Queen, London Coliseum) as Johanna, Julius D’Silva (Educating Rita, Reading Rep, What’s New Pussy Cat?, Birmingham Rep, Bridgerton and The Crown, Netflix) as Beadle, Jack Gibson (Reverberation, Bristol Old Vic, Four Play, King’s Head Theatre) as Tobias Ragg, Florence Andrews (School of Rock, Gillian Lynne Theatre, Wicked, Victoria Apollo) as Beggar Woman, Silas Wyatt-Barke (The Prince of Egypt, Dominion Theatre, Sunny Afternoon, Harold Pinter Theatre) as Adolfo Pirelli, Emily Ivana Hawkins (Alice: Return to Wonderland, Sherman Theatre, Sweet Henry V, Birmingham Rep) as Ensemble and Hadrian Delacey (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, UK tour, The Phantom of the Opera, His Majesty’s Theatre) as Ensemble.
Part of director Joe Murphy’s first season as artistic director of Birmingham Rep, the new production which has been designed by Elin Steele is due to play the Birmingham venue from 4 July to 9 August.
Commenting on the cast, The Rep’s artistic director, the production’s director, Joe Murphy added: “I am delighted that we are now able to share with everyone the full cast of Sweeney Todd. Joining the previously announced Ramin Karimloo, Meow Meow and David Bedella, I am thrilled that we have assembled such a talented and experienced company. I cannot wait to get into the rehearsal room to work on Sondheim’s darkly comic musical masterpiece.”
The creative team will also include Dr John Rigby (music supervisor and orchestral reduction), Rory Beaton (lighting designer), Kelsh Buckman-Drage (sound designer), Tinovimbanashe Sibanda (movement director), Abby Galvin (casting director), Leo Munby (musical director), Christopher Mundy (associate conductor) and David Gallagher (orchestral management).
The original 1979 Broadway production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction for Hal Prince. The production starred Len Cariou as Todd and Angela Lansbury as Mrs Lovett.
Based on Christopher Bond’s 1973 play Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the first West End production which opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the summer of 1980 starred Denis Quilley and Sheila Hancock. The production won the 1980 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
