The Big Bad Wolf – Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The Big Bad Wolf continues at Space 3 at theSpace on the Mile until 22 August (except 16).

Star rating: five stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

The big bad wolf is on the rampage again. For flesh. A suitably camp fairy godmother is determined to make him see the error of his ways. However, it’s a tall task, as sometimes the godmother isn’t up to it. Everyone avoids the wolf like the plague and it bothers him. Cue a host of fairy tale characters – Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin etc., all beautifully played by the four-strong cast.

Ultimately, the resolution comes through the unlikely medium of a rock festival, featuring the three little pigs, a hilarious techno-pop trio from Hamburg (get it?). There are jokes and cultural references aplenty, silliness, audience participation, super-precise staging and catchy songs which swing from rock to country with more than a hint of garage and punk, the cast switching instruments willy-nilly.

Composed and performed by the Plandits, it’s a terrific show – slick, funny, beautifully constructed and executed, which will please both children and adults alike.

Catch it! Go twice! The children came out of the venue singing the songs and the adults all had smiles on their faces.

It is written and produced by the cast – Thomas Holland-Hare, Eloise Hare, Peter Bottley and Jonathan Deakin.

James Bryce
